5 Weeks Until The San Francisco Marathon
Holy hell everyone, I'm exhausted. Can I just acknowledge how grateful I am that running is a part of my daily routine because I think I'd implode if I had to think about training for a marathon. (When did training for a marathon become the norm for me????" WHO AM I!?!??!!)
Working a full time job, a second full time job (this horse and pony show WHICH I LOVE but dear lord is it a lot of work), a third job writing for one of my favorite companies ever AND THEN getting The Road to Run, Selfie, Repeat (What's The Road to Run, Selfie, Repeat you ask? Check out the trailer --) all while training for a marathon has just about done me in.
I'm not going to lie to you, despite the chaos and exhaustion I've never been happier or more excited than I am right now. SO MUCH IS HAPPENING! I have thirteen million balls in the air (and I'm sure they are all going to come crashing down any minute) and even though I barely have enough time to sleep, I have this giant smile plastered on my face. I'm so, so, so excited to show you guys what I've been up to with my YouTube channel. It's been the most terrifying and rewarding thing I've ever worked on and we're working tirelessly to get it live. Stay tuned for episode 1 and make sure you subscribe to the channel to stay up to date on all the videos coming your way.
As for my marathon training, things are going exactly as they always do -- not according to plan. This is something I learned when I first trained for a marathon that your training plan is a guide not the word of the lord. I'm really busy! I'm pulling 14-16 hour days and even though I sit down every week to attempt to schedule everything out, speed bumps are bound to happen and I've learned that you just have to go with the flow. That's part of the fun though and even though training for a marathon is a huge time commitment, I try to make sure that it's only a part of my life and not running it.
Here's my training plan vs. what I've actually been doing.
I've been hitting FlyWheel pretty hard trying to stay on top of my cross training game. (My mileage is going to be the highest it's going to peak these next 3 weeks so avoiding injuries is on the top of my to do list.) FlyWheel is a boutique spin class here in the city that has little computers on your bike so you can keep track of your progress. I finally got my sister Samantha to go with me and we ended up wearing the same outfit without planning it!
I also FINALLY got my very first passport EVER! (I know don't judge me!) I tried to get my passport when I first moved to NYC but it was the BIGGEST pain in the you know where. I ended up having to make 4 different trips in one week and then when I finally had everything I needed, the government shut down! (Remember when the government shut down? Good times.) Then I misplaced my birth certificate and it was just a huge mess. Bottom line, I finally have a passport and I'm not afraid to use it!
It has been SO SO SO SO hot and muggy in NYC I've been really struggling trying to motivate myself to get out the door. Does anyone find themselves dressed and ready but just sitting there looking at the door thinking, "Why. Why is this happening? Nooooooooooo."
Sunday I got really lucky because I had friends who showed up to run with me during my 18 miles! I got to run the first 6 miles with my new friend Anoush who I met on the twitter! (I love social media because I am constantly meeting new best friends who are willing to put up with this sort of shenanigans when we run --)
After Anoush left me, my sister rode a Citi bike next to me to keep me entertained. She is the world's greatest sister and spent 12 miles riding next to me, holding my handheld water bottle, dancing with me and making up stories to keep me laughing.
Having Sammy to distract me was SO SO SO helpful because I probably would have quit around mile 17. I WAS OVER IT! I was hot, I was sweaty and I was tired! But Sammy helped me push through and afterwards I bought us some 1 trillion dollar post run smoothies from that fancy shmancy ripoff we call Juice Generation to reward us for our hard work and dedication. (Then after I showered we went to brunch and I demolished the world's most delicious cheeseburger.)
This marathon training session I'm really trying to run with my friends because they hold me accountable to track, hill and tempo runs. Yesterday I joined my friend Chloe who is one of the Lululemon ambassadors for a hill repeat workout. Her group runs are always really fun because there is such a diverse variety of runners. From professional triathelets to professional goofballs like myself, it helps me do what I'm supposed to be doing. (Not just running through the motions.) And afterwards we hit up a happy hour so everyone wins.
This weekend was also pretty special because I got to catch up with a bunch of my close friends from college! One of my favorite college professors Hugh was in town for his birthday party in the Lower East Side. I haven't seen him since moving to NYC so it was fun to be able to catch up with a bunch of my colleagues and one of my best friends who I never get to see Lowam. (We both live in the city but we are on opposite schedules! It's incredibly frustrating.)
It was really, really, really nice to be able to surround myself with artists. I forgot what it was like to sit and talk theater for hours on end! They look at the world in a different way and it's infectious. I left that party with my faith in humanity restored. (And I may or may not have had 2 pieces of cake, a canoli AND a few bites of cheesecake..) But it was Venieros which is one of New York's most famous cheesecake and pastry bakeries! When there's Venieros you don't say, "No I probably shouldn't" you say "Thank GOD I ran 18 miles this morning because I would like one of everything please!"
These next few weeks are going to be CRAZY TOWN friends. Between the high mileage and then the pre-marathon taper, it's going to be a bumpy ride! What do you want to see on The Road to Run, Selfie, Repeat? We're putting the next few episodes together so let me know if there's anything specific you'd like to see!
Until next time, #RunSelfieRepeat.
