9 Lies People Tell You About Healthy Eating
Losing weight is not easy. The concept of how to lose weight is easy, but execution is not. Here are 9 lies people tell you about eating healthy that I believe to be utter nonsense:
1. That salad is just as delicious as steak.
Salad is delicious. I love a good salad but anyone who tells you that a salad is more delicious than a giant steak is a liar. They just are.
2. That you stop craving sugar.
This one's my favorite, "You stop craving sugar after (X) amount of time." Lies. This is a lie. If you have a sweet tooth, you will never stop craving sugar, I know this from experience. Do you learn better
3. That a handful of nuts is better than a bag of chips.
Sure you may feel better after a handful of nuts but taste buds prefer salty and fried potato chips. And the whole "make your own potato chips"... Have you ever tried to bake your own potato chips?!?! It takes FOREVER. Tasty, yes. Time consuming, absolutely.
4. That you can't even taste the difference between soy and meat.
Can soy taste really yummy? It can! Can I still taste the difference between the best soy product and some meat? Always.
4. Drinking a glass of water will help you feel full.
This doesn't work. I drink maybe 30 million water bottles a day and that does not stop me from from wanting a snack when my brain has decided it's snack time.
5. That saying no to pasta and yes to spaghetti squash is easy.
Is spaghetti squash incredibly scrumptious? Indeed it is! Is it as delicious as some seriously carby pasta? No. No it's not. It's science. (OK it's not science but I mean...you get it...)
6. That losing weight and keeping it off isn't overwhelming and confusing.
Losing weight is simple, you have to eat healthy and exercise regularly. What's difficult is adjusting to the changes while healthy habits are formed. Anyone who tells you that it's not confusing or overwhelming doesn't know what you're going through. It's overwhelming. Just don't let that stop you from trying. You'll find what works for you.
7. That the internet and headlines like, "Lose 20 lbs in 20 days" set you up for failure.
From transformation stories of people who lost incredible amounts of weight really quickly to articles pulling you in every which way, the internet is no friend to anyone who wants to lose weight. Weight loss all depends on how much you have to lose. Someone trying to lose 20lbs will lose the weight much slower than someone who has 120lbs to lose. Don't compare yourself to anyone, move at your own pace and don't let set backs derail you.
8. That it's easy to plan, shop for, and prepare your healthy meals.
If you have a full time job, or god help you a family, then you especially know just how hard it is to want to make dinner after a really long workday. Is it easy to plan, shop for and prepare you weekly meals? No! No it's not. It's going to be more difficult...at first. Those first few weeks are much harder than they need to be, but you get the hang of it.
9. That you don't get bored eating fruits and veggies.
Fruits and veggies rock. I can eat carrots and hummus all day every day but can they get boring? Absolutely. Even with all sorts of variety in your diet, they still get boring. They just do.
Losing weight and keeping it off is so much more than just counting calories or depriving yourself. It drives me crazy when I see people juicing or doing a fad diet. If you really want to lose weight, make a life change. Here are a few tips to ensure success:
- Journal! Get a journal and write about what you're going through. Keep track of what is working for you and what isn't.
- Build a Community or Keep it to Yourself. I'm all for telling people what you're doing but if you want to keep it to yourself, that's fine as well. I don't like telling anyone when I am trying to lose weight. That way if I want a cheeseburger, I have a cheeseburger without 5 friends saying, "There goes your diet." It's not a diet! It's a lifestyle!
- Find a Balance. Eating healthy is all about finding a balance. You can have your steak and eat it too! When you plan ahead you can have pancakes for breakfast or a steak for dinner. It's all about finding balance. If you know you are going out to eat for a special dinner, eat healthier breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Then when you go to dinner immediately cut your proper portion and put the rest away for lunch or dinner the next day.
- Love Where You're At. I'm serious about this, LOVE WHERE YOU'RE AT! Look in the mirror and name things you like about yourself every single day. Pat yourself on the back and celebrate yourself because it's not speed bumps that derail a weight loss plan but how you recover from them. If you lose 20 lbs and suddenly gain 5 lbs back, it's how you say "It's alright, back on track. I got this." Instead of, "This is impossible hand over the Doritos." Take guilt out of the picture because guilt has no place in a weight loss effort.
- Small Goals. Do not be to restrictive when it comes to your diet. Start with smaller and more manageable goals. Maybe you work 12-14 hour days and order in for lunch and dinner. Start with one of those meals and cut the amount of days you order out in half. When bringing your meal and preparing it yourself starts to feel more manageable, then go for the other meal. Start small. Make a goal to go to Yoga or spin class 3 days a week on specific days.
The key to losing weight is planning ahead. Plan your exercises (join a class at your gym! That will absolutely hold you accountable) and plan your meals and grocery lists. It can feel really overwhelming at first because it's all so new. But as you get used to it, it gets easier. The changes become habitual and you don't have to think about it as much.
