Don't get me wrong, I love a New Year's resolution. I'm all about setting goals and using them as motivation to do something amazing with my life. But there is one New Year's resolution people tend to make that makes me a little sad. It's wanting to lose weight. So I ask you...

Running Struggles! You Ask And I Give My Non-Expert Advice #1-Feeling Self-Conscious When You Run

I spend about 30-45 minutes a day answering emails to my Run, Selfie, Repeat family. I get asked about my favorite chafe cream, shorts, shoes, protein powder, energy gels, water, how I wake up in the morning to run, how I hydrate, how I find the motivation not to quit, how I train for a marathon...the list goes on and on and on. It's arguably my favorite part of my day because being a new runner sucks (at least it sucked for me) and I love helping make running feel a tiny bit less impossible to you. But after months of answering these emails, it dawned on me...why not share my non-expert advice with all of you!?!? Allow me to introduce my new favorite segment of Run, Selfie, Repeat -- Running Struggles! You Ask And I Give My Non-Expert Advice.

So if you're a new runner or if you're simply curious to pick my brain, write me! Holler at me and it may end up on Run, Selfie, Repeat. Today's topic? Let's talk feeling self conscious when you run.

Today's "Running Struggles! You Ask and I Give My Non-Expert Advice" is all about feeling self conscious when you run!

Why Weight Is A Heavy Hitting Issue In The Running Community

There's a really powerful moment happening in the running world right now. Women's Running put Erica Schenk on the cover of their August magazine and Runners World wrote an article titled, "Is it possible to be fat and fit? At 250 pounds, distance runner Mirna Valerio provides an inspiring example." It's an incredibly exciting and powerful statement to stand behind someone who doesn't "look" like an athlete. It's brave to put yourself out there the way both Erica and Mirna have. I never would have had the courage to do what they're doing because I was far to ashamed of the way I was. There's been a lot of backlash online about these two covers and I want to weigh in...

Losing Weight and Taking That Next Step

After my brother passed away in 2009, my only goal became making it to the next day. It's hard to explain what it feels like to face your own mortality while adjusting to the feeling that a huge giant piece of you was stolen. My brother wasn't just a sibling, he was a part of me. My sister Samantha, myself and my brother were a unit. We were a dangerous trio and when we lost him, it felt like we lost ourselves.

One thing I did not anticipate after his passing was the weight gain. He passed away in June of 2009 and by the end of that year I found myself weighing in at over 200 pounds.  Now on top of figuring out how to live without my brother I had to figure out how to live with new foreign version of myself. Here is what I learned about losing weight and taking that next step...

“It’s Kind of Fun To Do The Impossible.”

Two and a half years ago running was impossible. I couldn't run to the end of my block without feeling like my lungs were going to burst into flames and my heart was going to explode. Being athletic and active to this day doesn’t come easily to me. I’m still new to the running world. I didn’t run in High School or College and it wasn't until I had to lose the 60+ pounds I gained after my brother passed away that I started making conscious efforts to be physically active for my health. My story isn’t unique. I’ve met hundreds of runners who started running when shit hit the fan or something traumatic happened to them. This is why I think it's imperative that you strive to make impossible possible...

The Difference Between a Perfect Body and a Strong One

Close your eyes and imagine someone who is in the best shape of their lives. Alright now imagine an "average" person who is realistically in the best shape of their lives. What do you see? Is there a difference between the two? For some crazy reason we have this perceived image of how someone who is "in shape" is supposed to look. They have visible muscles that can cut glass, a thigh gap, toned everything, zero cellulite and a tan. (Why are they always tan?) Well excuse me while I hop up on my soap box and throw my two cents in the mix...

Running Is Cheaper Than Therapy

Any runner can attest that running is an incredibly helpful form of therapy.
