The Ultimate Crowdsourced Running Shorts Guide

When it comes to the best running shorts, it's almost impossible to find the perfect pair! And because our favorite brands only show us photos of fit models who look NOTHING like us, we live in fear that our money will be wasted, our thighs will be rubbed raw, and our ass cheeks will be exposed.

While personal preference is a huge factor (Some women like their running shorts longer while others like a pair that is just long enough! Some like a sleek streamlined pair and others want ALL THE POCKETS. Some like spandex and others want split shorts!),  I knew there had to be a way to help women troubleshoot the overwhelming task of finding the perfect pair of running shorts.

And after seeing how helpful the ULTIMATE CROWDSOURCED SPORTS BRA GUIDE was, I wanted to recreate it with the ultimate crowdsourced running shorts guide!

Do you have a pair of running shorts that you love and trust? SHARE IT WITH THE #BADASSLADYGANG!

HOW TO SUBMIT:

  1. Copy and paste the below information into an email.
  2. Fill in the question with your information!
  3. Submit a photo of yourself wearing the shorts. Ideally, please submit your photo in a sports bra. Not comfortable rocking the #SportsBraSquad? NO PROBLEM! Just lift your shirt up so we can see the waistband. (**YOU HAVE TO INCLUDE A PICTURE TO BE FEATURED. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT WE RARELY GET TO SEE WOMEN WHO LOOK LIKE US WEARING THE CLOTHING WE ARE LOOKING TO BUY. IT IS INCREDIBLY HELPFUL WHEN WE CAN SEE THE DIVERSE RANGE OF STRENGTHS REPRESENTED.**)

Your Height:

Your everyday pants size:

Size in running shorts:

XL Hiker

Name of shorts, brand & price:

SparkleSkirt, $70 (Technically it is a skirt, BUT it has the most comfortable shorts EVER underneath which is why I wear them.)

Inseam length:

(Unknown)

What you like about the shorts:

The biggest part for me is that the built-in spandex shorts do not ride up AT ALL.  Like ever.  Not even a little.  I also love all of the pockets and how light the skirt/shorts feel.

What you don't like about the shorts:

Nothing at all.

Furthest distance run in the shorts:

31 miles.  Yep, a 50k and not a single bit of chafing.

How long you've been running in these shorts:

1 year

Do they ride up?

NO.  Not ever.

Chafe level 1-10: (1 meaning ZERO CHAFE, 10 meaning ALL THE BLOOD.)

1.  Absolutely no chafe.

Do they have pockets?

YES!!  There are two pockets on each side of the shorts which can hold keys, phone, gels, a water bottle, and even a gun.  There's a pocket on the waistband that zips that comfortably holds my iPhone 7 with a case.

Size in running shorts:

XL SparkleSkirt Slim Cut.

Name of shorts, brand & price:

Slim Style SparkleSkirt, $65-$70

Inseam length:

The inseam on the XL I have on is 7.25”.

What you like about the shorts:

I love EVERYTHING about this skirt. It has huge pockets on each leg, and a zippered pocket on the front. They are so cute, and they are so comfortable, too. I have to have high waisted everything, and these are just that! And the waistband doesn’t dig in, which is also something I struggle with finding.

What you don't like about the shorts:

I wish they were a tiny bit more wicking, and I wish they were a little cheaper, but since I can buy them second hand that helps.

Furthest distance run in the shorts:

Only 2 miles so far, I’m new to this whole running thing.

How long you've been running in these shorts:

This particular skirt I’ve had a couple months. I have one that’s a couple years old and it’s still in perfect condition except for one small hole in one of the pockets.

Do they ride up?

No! They do not ride up! I almost didn’t believe it. I thought for sure my thunder thighs would eat the shorts just like every other pair I’ve tried, but they didn’t!

Chafe level 1-10: (1 meaning ZERO CHAFE, 10 meaning ALL THE BLOOD.)

1! No chafing to be found!

Do they have pockets?

YES! A 5”x5” pocket on each leg, and a big zippered pocket in the waistband. I can hold an iPhone 7 plus in one of the side pockets, a water bottle AND a pepper spray in the other side pocket, and my keys in the waistband pocket. Best part is it still doesn’t ride down from carrying all that stuff!

Wearing size XL

Name of shorts, brand & price:

Redemption Shorties (6”), Skirt Sports, $34.99 – $50.00

Inseam length:

6"

What you like about the shorts:

They’re my perfect length - not so long that they look dowdy, but long enough that they don’t get eaten by my thighs; waist comes nice and high so no crack attack or band falling under my belly - I have a long torso so that happens often to me with other shorts. Also love that they’re not just in basic black, as well.

What you don't like about the shorts:

Honestly, they’re my fave, so nothing comes to mind. They don’t have a drawstring, so that might be an issue for some, but they fit me well so it isn’t necessary for me.

Furthest distance run in the shorts:

10 miles

How long you've been running in these shorts:

Ran in their previous version for 2 years (they were .5 inches shorter with one less pocket, this version is better!), in this exact style for the last 6ish months.

Do they ride up?

Nope.

Chafe level 1-10: (1 meaning ZERO CHAFE, 10 meaning ALL THE BLOOD.)

I’ve never worn any shorts without a little body glide, but have never had these come up on the thighs at all - 1

Do they have pockets?

YES- two: one on each leg. Phone, keys, gels no problem. A can of beer? Even better.

1/2 marathon

How long you've been running in these shorts:

I have had these 1 year.

Do they ride up?

They only ride up if my weight is up.

Nothing I don’t like about these.

Furthest distance run in the shorts:

How long you've been running in these shorts:

On the sides and a big zippered pocket on the back at the waist.  I think the back pocket will hold a cell phone.  The pockets on the side are huge!

Name of shorts, the brand who makes the shorts, price, and URL:

Lululemon Speed Up Short LONG 4”, $58 (I buy them for around $33 on eBay brand new though) (...I didn’t realize there was a difference and that there were shorter shorts (2.5”) so I bought another pair and they were accidentally shorter and it’s a big no-no for a tall girl like me... and they chafe like crazy and my booty hangs out 🤭)

Inseam length:

4"

What you like about the shorts:

They do not ride up, they’re cute, they have a butt pocket and they’re soft. Plus the drawstring

What you don't like about the shorts:

It’s Lululemon so it’s expensive and since there is a more popular shorter style it’s harder to find these online.

Furthest distance run in the shorts:

13 miles

How long you've been running in these shorts:

Do they ride up?

Nope, but the shorter 2.5” version of these do so BUYERS BE AWARE

Do they have pockets?

Yes, pockets- zipper pocket on the butt. Could hold car keys and maybe a gel or several gels. Can also fit credit cards.

Dona Jo Ultimate Short, $42   (multiple prints)

Inseam length:

7 inches.

What you like about the shorts:

The shorts are so soft. They don't chafe or ride up like most. From the moment you put them on, they feel like butter.

What you don't like about the shorts:

I don't like that you can't buy the shorts in a plain color. Also, after training for a marathon in them, they became stiff with sweat.

Furthest distance run in the shorts:

How long you've been running in these shorts:

2 years

Do they ride up?

Chafe level 1-10: (1 meaning ZERO CHAFE, 10 meaning ALL THE BLOOD.)

2

Do they have pockets?

Yes.

If yes, how many pockets and what can they hold? iPhone? iPhone plus? car keys? gels? credit cards? etc.)

One small pocket on the waistband. Could fit a gel or a car key.

Emily W.

Your height:

5' 7.5"

Your everyday pants size:

I usually wear a 6-8-10 pants size depending on brand.

Size in running shorts:

I have four pairs of these shorts in two different sizes: two in size 8 and two in size 6. Sometimes I wear the 6, sometimes the 8, depending on if I'm bloated, how far I'm running, how much I'm carrying, etc.

Name of shorts, brand & price:

Oiselle Long Pocket Jogger Shorts, $62

Inseam length:

8.25"

What you like about the shorts:

I used to love the Oiselle Striders and these are like that length-wise but with SO MANY MORE POCKETS! I love ALLL the pockets (there are 5), but I mostly love that they don't budge and they prevent thigh chafing. I hate wearing a running belt for my phone or fuel and these shorts get rid of the need for that! They're super-high-quality material and I can wear them forEVER. They also dry super fast. I've worn them in 20+ mile long runs in the rain and they didn't chafe or even feel wet on my skin inside!

What you don't like about the shorts:

I wish the light blue color didn't show sweat, but that's about it! I own these in all the colors and I like the dark ones best. I originally bought my normal Oiselle size, an 8, and they fit, but I didn't feel super secure when I had a TON of stuff in my pockets (could feel bouncing), so I sized down to the 6 for my full marathon and it was perfect - nothing moved and I had a ton of stuff in my pockets!

Furthest distance run in the shorts:

26.2+ I have worn these for many long runs and also for the full Flying Pig!

How long you've been running in these shorts:

Several months

Do they ride up?

No, especially if you size down.

Chafe level 1-10: (1 meaning ZERO CHAFE, 10 meaning ALL THE BLOOD.)

1 (ZERO CHAFE for me)  I've worn them on 20+ mile long runs in the rain and they didn't chafe or even feel wet on my skin inside!

Do they have pockets?

These have FIVE pockets! Two large ones on the legs, a pretty big zippered one on the back, two small mesh ones. During my recent marathon, these held my iPhone X, two packages of Clif Bloks, lip balm, sunscreen, candy that I was handed on the course, extra headphones, extra pins, tissues, sunglasses, and more!

Name of shorts, brand & price:

Oiselle Long Pocket Jogger Shorts, $62

Inseam length:

8.25” in all lengths

What you like about the shorts:

These are pretty much the only shorts that work for me. They DON’T RIDE UP and this is the only pair of shorts I’m able to say that about. The material is thick with just the right amount of compression and there is a giant pocket on each side. My iPhone 7 easily fits down in there and doesn’t pop out. There is also a zippered pocket on the back that’s a great size for keys & money. 2 more mesh pockets on the back waist and complete the 5 pockets! They’re cute with a little detailing on each leg and just the right length.

What you don't like about the shorts:

They only come in black and 2 shades of blue. Don’t like to wear blue because I sweat a lot and not a fan of the “I look like I peed myself” look.

Furthest distance run in the shorts:

11 miles

How long you've been running in these shorts:

2 months

Do they ride up?

Nope. And please understand that me saying that means they don’t move!

Chafe level 1-10: (1 meaning ZERO CHAFE, 10 meaning ALL THE BLOOD.)

1

Do they have pockets?

5 total pockets. 2 on each side that could seriously hold water bottles. My phone goes way down there and doesn’t move. 2 mesh pockets on the waistband in the back holds gummies, chapstick or extra lubricants. One zippered pocket in the back middle waistband for secures items.

Do they have pockets?

Yes, side zipper pocket. Can phone credit cards and a gu/gel (could fit two energy gels, but I think it would feel weird/weigh down the shorts since they are super light). Also can fit keys, but I usually just put in the one key I need so it doesn't get weighed down.

Kelsey B.

Your height:

Your everyday pants size:

29r

Size in running shorts:

Large

Name of shorts, brand & price:

Dirt Pounder, rabbit, $62.00

Inseam length:

4 inches

What you like about the shorts:

These shorts have 7 pockets, the Gu & Key storage possibilities are endless and the inseam is longer than most to prevent chafing but they stretch and have a split so you have mobility. I like the built-in undies, one less thing to wash after a run! They are quick dry so they recover post running well, just in time for brunch. The wide waistband holds them securely and distributes the weight evenly even after you fill the pockets will stuff. The brand is made in the USA and owned by women which is pretty awesome too!

What you don't like about the shorts:

They will sometimes stick to my thighs, once soaked with sweat.

Furthest distance run in the shorts:

10 miles

How long you've been running in these shorts:

3 months

Do they ride up?

Occasionally the legs of the shorts ride up my thighs when running stairs or very steep hills. The waistband always stays in place.

Chafe level 1-10: (1 meaning ZERO CHAFE, 10 meaning ALL THE BLOOD.)

1

Do they have pockets?

Yes – 7 POCKETS – Keys, Gu, Smaller iPhone – not my 8+, credit cards, GU trash (that no longer goes in my sports bra for a sticky disaster).

Pants 28/6

Size in running shorts:

6

Name of shorts, brand & price:

Brooks Chaser Short, $48

Inseam length:

5"

What you like about the shorts:

I am a big time shorts wearer but struggle to find the right length and a waistband that doesn’t ride up my stomach. These don’t bunch in the crotch and inner thighs and stay put in the waist! Also, they are modest enough to keep the booty in but short enough so I feel like I can move.

What you don't like about the shorts:

No zipper pocket.

Furthest distance run in the shorts:

10-13 trail miles and they were perfect from start to finish.

How long you've been running in these shorts:

Since the day I discovered them 1.5 years ago.

Do they ride up?

No!! Not in the thighs or the waist!

Chafe level 1-10: (1 meaning ZERO CHAFE, 10 meaning ALL THE BLOOD.)

1

Do they have pockets?

Yes, two in the waistband to hold a key, credit card or ID, or gel. You could probably stuff in some chew packets too.

Inseam length:

What you like about the shorts:

They were my first pair of Lululemon shorts, and I keep going back to them.  They feel like you are running in nothing. The block-it pocket doesn’t allow sweat to get through.  Super flattering. Quality is amazing!!

What you don't like about the shorts:

Nothing! Wait, sometimes sizes vary. I go between a 4 and a 6.

Furthest distance run in the shorts:

How long you've been running in these shorts:
