It's Motivational Monday! & The Weekend Selfie Roundup

MY HOW TIME FLIES! It’s already Motivational Monday! MY favorite post of the week (even though Monday is my least favorite day of the week.) How was this weekend? Anyone run get out and run!? I went out for my long run yesterday and wound up sunburnt and pretty dehydrated. YAY SPRING! Click here for some SPF guidance.

I got an amazing text message from one of my best gal pals Tori who ran her first 5k yesterday: C.A.T.S Victory for Victims 5k beating her goal time by 2.5 minutes. (Her awesome race day selfie is included in today’s roundup.) Just another example, despite how intimidating that first few weeks of running seem, time flies and before you know it you’re going to be crossing the finish line, princess waving to the throngs of cheering spectators and the newest member of the running community. (Non-runners, have I mention you should take the couch to 5k challenge?)

Stepping off of my soap box, todays “Why I Run” comes to us from the incredible Debbie McDonald (@MaddiesMimmie) a supermom, super grandmother, runner and 9th grade literature teacher extraordinaire. She writes,

“I started running a few years ago in my 40s after I quit smoking. I had to get out of the house to avoid murdering my family so I ran. Then I ran some more. Then I realized, hey! I'm actually pretty good at this. I've run about 25 or so 5k's, I coach cross country, and I recently ran my first half marathon at the age of 46. I finished my half in 3 hours, 28 minutes. Very slow, but I'm old and really didn't train. I only went all out the last 3.1 miles because I KNEW I could run that far. I just wanted to finish without embarrassing myself or having to call a taxi.  I'm planning to do my first zombie chase race next month. Fun times!

Attach(ed) is a pic of my 3 year old granddaughter Maddie and me running her very first race last Saturday. There is no way I will ever be able to selfie while running, but this is the next best thing. I've got a 16 year old daughter who looks just like me and she took the pic! :)

Anyhow, Maddie and I were approaching the finish line of the Peanut Proud fun run and when people started cheering for her, she started crying. She wanted them to be quiet. LOL! My daughter snapped the picture at just that moment. Of course, Maddie and I dressed appropriately for her first race in matching tutus.”

Tutu power!

Tutu power!

Endurance races are a mind game and ANYONE can do them! Completing a half marathon may seem impossible, but just to be able to say “I did it” is one of the most rewarding and gratifying feelings that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. I love how Debbie describes finishing her half saying “I KNEW I could run that far.” Because you can! Whether you finish in 1 hour or 4, completing a 13.1 mile race is quite the feat but totally possible! The best part about running is you can start at any age! I talk to people all the time who say “I can’t run with you I’m so slow!” I’M SLOW! My goal for the Brooklyn Half is to break 2 hours and this is going to be my sixth half marathon! I don’t run to be fast, I run to run. (Granted there are days when you’re halfway through a run and calculating how much time you have left. You think “if only I could run a six minute mile this would be over in 36 minutes instead of an hour.”)  You didn’t miss the boat if you weren’t a track star. If you’re 60 years old and you haven’t run a day in your life there’s no better day to start than today. Running is for everyone and those endorphins are about the greatest thing since sliced bread.  So thank you for sharing your story Debbie, and I love love love love love this picture of you and your granddaughter running the Peanut Proud Fun Run.
