Running Dates are Real
Did you know that people go on running dates? As in “hello stranger, do you want to slap some spandex on, take your makeup off, put on a baseball cap, get all winded, sweaty and gross to run six miles with me after work?” I am not a girly girl. I do not need an hour to get ready and casual is one of my favorite words. (Closely behind free, cupcake and dance party) But a RUNNING DATE!?!
Not only that but running with people is difficult. I have run solo since day one and I’m still getting used to running with friends or coworkers. I mean, I can’t listen to Beyonce. I bring my phone hoping we will all put our music on and just run near each other but that NEVER happens. What happens during interval training when I’m a little tired and there’s no Beyonce reminding me, “Who runs the world, girls?” Who reminds me who runs the world!?!?
What’s an even bigger kicker is this gentleman caller I am talking to was like “we should run the bridges.” And I am thinking GREAT, not only am I going to worry about this guy LITERALLY running away from me but now I have to factor the possibility of jumping off a bridge to escape. (Then I’m all, whoa crazy calm yourself, remember...)
BUT how does one act on a running date? I mean how am I supposed to be witty, charming and flip my hair when I am running!?!?!? I can’t talk and run! Ask my friends who try to talk to me on the phone while I’m running. I sound like a wounded elephant. But I have no time to go on a date! I work and then I have to either run or go to the gym! (Running runs my life!) A running date fits in my schedule and a guy who runs? PERFECT! No Sunday morning explanations as to why you’re up at 7 to go run for 2 hours. (Running problems, am I right?)
I NEEDED ANSWERS, so I did what any intelligent and inquisitive female would do. I first googled him to find how fast he runs his races (and you know to make sure he’s not a murderer) and then I googled "running dates." Here’s what I found:
First up, Runner’s World What did I take from this article I didn’t already know?
1. THEY WANT ME TO TAKE IT EASY. TAKE IT EASY! I’m all, whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa? But I’m training, I have to stick to the plan. And runners world is all run at “a relaxed pace that lets both of you chat comfortably.” Chat comfortably so we are walking now!?! Ugh this is a nightmare.
2. “Don’t Spit or Blow Snot. You should control whatever bodily functions you can.” I’m screwed! I can’t control how snotty I am! Just thinking about not being snotty makes me snotty. (This is doomed. Cat lady here I come.)
3. “DON'T insist on making eye contact while running, since anything more than a quick glance could cause you to stumble or fall.” So no winking? How am I supposed to gaze deeply into his eyes if we are running? OK I digress, this one is good because I don’t have to stress about stuff being in my teeth. (I was on a normal date last night and he’s all “You have something in your teeth.” It was magic.)
Let’s move on to a running date success story. OK yall get ready for some swoony action. Meet Julie and Simon, runner lovers. Let’s hear what Simon has to say about his one and only.
“...Running experiences I have had with Julie really stand out for me. The first was running Julie's debut marathon with her in New York. Julie wanted to try to finish faster than four hours and we crossed the Central Park finish line holding hands in 3:59:26. The look of elation on Julie's face at such a wonderful achievement, mixed with shock of the pain in her legs, will stay with me forever.”
Ugh my heart is MELTING. Let’s keep going. Here's another marathon they did together,
“I remember when I finished thinking that it was simply the hardest thing I had ever done. I was really worried about Julie and concerned at the state she would be in after running 26.2 miles over two mountain passes on narrow, rocky paths. The grin that went from ear to ear as she crossed the finish line was a testament to how tough Julie is physically and mentally.”
This guy is perfect. I want someone to tell me how they think I’m tough physically and mentally! Ok I’m in. But just so we are all clear this is how this is going to go....
