Tuesdays and The NYC Pride Run

Well, we made it to Tuesday...barely. Thank you for all the jokes yesterday everyone. They helped me smile all day long. Last night had a really nice dinner at a barbeque restaurant called "Blue Smoke" to remember my brother. He loved to eat ribs and get bbq sauce all over his face so bbq seemed like a perfect option. We met up with some of our best friends in the city and celebrate our fairy god parents Deb and Larry's wedding anniversary as well. They are one of our core support units in NYC and they both are an invaluable support system to my sister and I. We all hung out outside, enjoyed the weather, joked and laughed for an hour before heading in for dinner. We ended up having a really good time. It was exactly what we needed and I think Scott would have loved it. It was also nice to take one complete day off from training because last week was rough.

I went way too hard and last Sunday was one of the worst runs I have ever had since I started running. 2 miles in, I was halfway across the Brooklyn Bridge when I started having chest pain, sort of like a dull ache/sharp pressure right under my heart. So, a little freaked out, I stopped to try to walk it off. When that subsided I took off again and developed terrible side cramps, a stomach ache and a back ache! I was starting and stopping every half mile. I was hoping to log 8 miles but decided to throw in the towel at 6 and finish my work out on a bike. I rode about 8 miles before turning in and heading home.

You know when they say “listen to your body” well evidently there’s a difference between sore muscles and muscle fatigue. My body was FATIGUED. I went really hard last week and this week I am going to take it back a bit. Why? Because that’s how injuries happen. Nothing would suck more than having to take a month off at this point in my marathon training.

SO, what does my week look like? Tuesday: Strength training and Intervals, Wednesday: Recovery run, Thursday: Strength Training and hill repeats , Friday: Cross training, Saturday: 5 miles, Sunday: 13 miles. And every morning I am waking up an hour early to take 30-45 minutes to stretch. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY SATURDAY IS THE NEW YORK PRIDE RUN!!!! That’s right friends, Saturday=the most fabulous 5 mile run in celebration of NYC Pride and then it is is going to be an epic weekend filled with love, dancing, rainbow flags, lots of skin and QUEENS! I know what you're thinking, what sort of selfie shenanigans will be happening, well I am glad you asked because Saturday’s hashtag during the run will be…………

DRUM ROLL PLEASE……………….. #QueensOfThePrideRun!

This is going to be my first NYC pride and we are gonna run around and dance all over the place! (Granted Saturday is going to be an early night for me since I have a 13 miler before the parade starts.) I am anticipating a really fun weekend and quite frankly I need it. If you have never been to pride, go. It’s one of the most fun ways you can spend your Saturday or Sunday and everyone is just so incredibly happy to be there. I am excited to get out, enjoy the weather and support my LGBTQ friends. (And get to run in a rainbow tutu! YAS!)

SWITCHING GEARS! As someone who was born and raised in San Diego, where the weather fluctuates never, heading to work in sunshine and experiencing monsoon conditions by lunch is extremely off putting! I am having a hard time keeping my phone completely dry during my rainy training runs and I found the coolest gizmo that I had to share. How many of you have had fatal iPhone/iPod/electronic accidents with a toilet, jacuzzi, pool, washing machine, slip and slide, sink etc? Or for those of us out logging long runs on the harsh sunny weekends, we sweat all over our music devices/phones. I want to introduce you to bheestie, the lifesaving bag of beads that will save your electronics after they get wet. AND THE BEST PART IS, THEY ARE CHEAP! They are approximately $30 and the bags last about a year! How many of you have unsuccessfully placed your electronics in rice? Save yourself the heartache and the hundreds of dollars and just get 2 of these bags. Keep one in your car and keep one in your home. They even recommend placing headphones and devices in the bags daily to help them last longer. I’m a fan. I just ordered one. CLICK HERE to check it out. I think I just saved my iPhone from NYCs destructive summer. You’re welcome iPhone, you’re welcome.

Alright everyone, that’s all I have today. I am anxious to get out and run. After yesterday I just want to Forrest Gump it and run forever. Until tomorrow, #RunSelfieRepeat.
