15 Reasons to Become a Runner

For some crazy reason non runners think runners are insane. Evidently the way they see it anyone who willingly wakes up early to run farther than most people walk in a week (probably a month) is insane. Valid point. But not every runner is training for a marathon and running insane distances on the daily. What's crazy about  getting up early to run a quick 3-5 miles?

The only thing that held me back from becoming a runner was the fact that I hated running. No, I didn't just hate running I vehemently despised it. I would say I equated it with torture. "It's just not for me," I would say with a rage filled smile. Jokes on me! Turns out I didn't hate running, I just never gave it a try.

The hardest part about becoming a runner is getting started. (Here's what you can expect when you first start running-CLICK HERE) Wondering if you should try? If any of these apply to you then I think you should become a runner.

If you moved somewhere new and want to make friends.

A really good way to meet new people in your area is to get on meetup or to join a free running club. Most specialty running stores have group runs and they welcome all different types of paces.

If you broke up with your significant other and/or got broken up with by your significant other.

Feeling down about a breakup, get running! Just a few weeks ago I was on the subway on my way to a race in Central Park and three of the women I was talking to on the train told me they started running because of a breakup. The reason I put on running shoes the first time was because I was having a hard time getting over the guy I was seeing. If you are having man or lady problems, run! You may feel like you are running from your problems but you are actually running towards your solution

If you are going through a hard time.

Life's tough. If you are being eaten alive by anxiety become a runner. Nothing helps alleviate anxiousness better than a run. Heard of runner's high? It's a real thing. Running releases endorphins and actually makes you happy. It's science.

If you’re in a rut.

Stuck? Need a change? Make a goal. Sign up to run a half marathon or a 10k. Set a goal and get moving!

If you’re bored.

Need something to do? Run!

If you enjoy a routine.

Before work or after work it brings a little peace to your day. A scheduled alone time that you can always count on. I love talking to Mom's who run because they always tell me it's the only alone time they get in their day. Make it your time.

If you are spending too much money going out.

This is the exchange I have with my friends every week:

Friends: "Want to go out tonight?"

Me: "I can't I have to run in the morning."

Friends: "Want to get drinks?"

Me: "1 beer, I have to run in the morning."

I like to spend my money on adventures and clothes you guys. I'm not a fan of spending $100 a weekend on drinks. New York cocktails are a trillion dollars. Running gives me an excuse to say no and not seem like a Debbie Downer (not that I need alcohol to be the life of the party. I'm a wild stallion with or without a beer.)

If you want to prove something to yourself.

Running gave me purpose. It gave me something I was doing with my life to be proud of all the while keeping my cupcake habit in check. Everyone wins.

If you have some time on your hands.

Do you normally go home after work or school and binge watch TV? Spend some of that time running. Get outside!

If you hate the gym.

I hate the gym. I will say it with freedom and abandon. I feel uncomfortable at the gym and I get bored VERY easily. You can't cheat when you run outside! Even if you decide to walk, you still have to walk home.

If you are in crisis.

I lost my brother suddenly in 2009. When I grieve I have a tendency to want to sit in my room and wallow but running has helped me get up and get outside. I know the last thing you want to do is go out in public but I just throw on a hat and some sunglasses and get moving. I feel closest to him when I run. I do my best thinking and meditating when I run. I have time to just process and cry. Running has been an invaluable resource for me.

If you want to get healthy.

No brainer here...physical exercise=a bangin' body. Yes to confident naked bodies.

If you enjoy eating.

In addition to that bangin' body YOU GET TO EAT! Ever heard of carb loading? YES PLEASE.

If you are stressed.

Again it's the endorphins. After a stressful day the best way to shake it off is to run.

If you are a human.

Just because you think you hate running may not mean you hate running. A few weeks is all it takes to catch the running bug. Once you can run a few miles without stopping it's smooth sailing. It's a no brainer. The running community is a welcoming one and we want you. Try to the couch to 5k challenge. Sign up to run a half marathon. You won't regret it.

Until tomorrow friends, #RunSelfieRepeat.
