Global #SportsBraSquad Day 2019
Mark your calendars because on July 13th, we’re showing the world what strength looks like because it’s GLOCAL #SPORTSBRASQUAD DAY!
My name is Kelly Roberts and I am the founder of the #SportsBraSquad, a movement dedicated to redefining what strength looks like.
Truthfully, the #SportsBraSquad was born out of desperation. It was a hot, humid summer day and I got a late start on a long run. About a mile in, I was dying in my capris and shirt but I was terrified to ditch a layer and run the following fourteen miles through New York City in only a sports bra. I was convinced someone would affirm the horrible things I said to myself whenever I saw my body when I looked in the mirror.
I was running 40+ miles a week, hitting the gym, and eating healthy…why wasn’t I skinnier? Why didn’t I have the thinner body I thought I needed in order to be beautiful?
That day, I ditched my shirt, took out my headphones and got ready to scream at anyone who dared to make a comment about my body or call me fat. And to my total and complete astonishment, no one batted an eye. No one said a single thing.
After that run, I decided that I was done hiding the body I was convinced I wasn’t allowed to feel proud of. I shared my experience on Instagram and the #SportsBraSquad was born.
It started as a way for women to ditch their shirts along with their insecurities, and show the world what strength looks like. For decades, the health, fitness, and weight loss industries have sold us a narrative that one particular body type is the one we should all strive for and it’s complete and total bullshit.
