What It's Like To Have A Cold When You're A Runner

I NEVER get sick. I can't even tell you the last time I had the flu and I probably get a cold 2 or 3 times a year. So when I woke up a few days ago with a cold, it's safe to say I wasn't happy about it. Truth is, I am really annoying when I'm sick. I'll tell ANYONE who will listen. If someone smiles at me on the subway i'll whimper, "I HAVE A COLD AND I"M MISERABLE THANK YOU!" Or take this morning for example, I'm spinning like a lunatic at Flywheel and the really hot guy seated directly beside me turns to me and says, "Looks like we are battling for the top spot! WE HAVE A BATTLE!" To which I pathetically scream, "I'M SICK!!!!!!!!! Don't you care?!?" (Not my finest moment.) It's very melodramatic and awful for everyone involved. My apologies.

The rule for working out when you're sick is as follows, if it's above the neck you're clear. If you're coughing, hacking, or have anything happening below the neck, just rest. Easier said than done right? We runners don't like missing a workout. LUCKILY I've only got some sinus pressure and a runny nose so I've been working out regularly. I even took the liberty of having my smarty pants roommate Molly who's about to begin her residency check my lungs for clearance last night, you know, because I'm responsible...SEE!?

What it's like to have a cold when you're a runner:

Day 1 AM: Denial

Day 1 PM: Acceptance



Day 2PM: Self Pity

Day 3 AM: "Woe is me."

Day 3 PM: Hopelessness

Day 4 AM: Lethargy

Day 4 PM: NyQuil

Day 5 AM: Progress

Day 5 PM: Regression

Day 6 AM: Pain and Sorrow

Day 6 PM: Irrational Decisions

And here we are on day 7. All I know is I went to spinning this morning and now I'm an inch away from a choma so maybe that wasn't the best decision. SO this weekend I will be resting...after my long run. I HAVE A PROBLEM! I'M ADDICTED TO ENDORPHINS! If anyone has any tips, send them my way.
